It had been three days since the accidental overdose rushed Logan to the shit-hole he was sitting in. His room suffocated him with the closeness of the whitewashed walls and the smell of clean. He didn't feel safe in the Common Room were no one would ever come close to talking to him anyway. In his spare time, he liked to wander the hallways because they were mostly empty. Everyone here sat and cried in their rooms or went to group; that wasn't his scene.
He dragged his feet while he walked. The employees had taken his shoes because he was a 'suicide risk.' That was bullshit. His torn jeans dragged on the thin carpet and he was sure that he'd shock anyone he touched. His hands were thrust down into his pockets and he stared at the group as he shuffled almost silently through the hospital.

Tired of the four white walls that caged her in, Abigail decided to venture out into the hallways of the hospital and explore her new surroundings. As she shuffled through the halls, she couldn't help but notice the place felt a little dead. Everyone she passed seemed to move around her like zombies. No one made eye contact or acknowledge each other when crossing paths. The only sign of life she noticed was the t.v humming in the Common room, with absent minded chattering rising above the t.v's volume. Abigail took a right down another hallway which lead her away from the common area and down an empty hall. It was eerie how sound proof the hospital walls were, assuming it was probably to shield the patients from hearing each other's occasional outbursts and crying. As she came to the end of the hall, she could hear someone one coming toward her from an adjoining hallway. Down the left hallway, she saw a young man dragging his bare feet along the carpet, his hands shoved deep in his pockets. He looked a bit unfriendly and definitely troubled which seemed to be alarming and a bit intriguing to Abigail. She stood still as he closer toward her. Mimicking his gesture, Abigail shoved her hands in her pockets wondering if she should say hello to this fellow roamer.

He heard her coming. The padding of feet on the hard, carpetded floor was unmistakable to him. He often heard the night workers walking around, checking in rooms to see if everyone was still alive. They opened his door and let the light pour in, which woke him up and wouldn't let him go back to sleep. So he would lie awake and listen to the rhythm their feet made.
He wondered if he should talk to her. He had mostly kept to himself since he'd arrived, not wanting to be in this place any longer than he needed to. Having a friend wasn't nearly as important as leaving. Against all his thoughts on just wanting to get out, he suddenly felt very lonely and wondered if he shouldn't just say hello. The only question was how to start a conversation with someone you don't know.
"What up?" he asked casually, as though he was only going to pass her. He waited on what she was going to say.

Abigail nodded her head at the boy, "Hey." She couldn't quite tell if he was making a gesture of friendship or just being polite. Pulling her hands from her pockets, she brushed her long blond hair behind her shoulders, tucking a piece or two behind her ears, then leaned against the wall, preparing for possible conversation.
"Anything good down that hall?" Abigail winced a bit at her lame question. She didn't know how an individual strikes up a conversation in a loony bin.

Logan looked up at her and saw her stroke her hair behind her ears. "And by good you would be meaning what, exactly?" his tone of voice was snarky, even though he didn't mean it like that. There was a lot of times he came off as harsh or mean when he didn't intend to. In this place, especially, the rude comments and offensive gestures seemed to just pour out of him. He had stopped walking in order to talk to her. For a while, he just looked on as their voices echoed softly down the empty hallway.

Abigail felt herself go a little flush. She started to think she had made a mistake trying to make small chat. She shoved her hands back into her pocket and looked at the ground. She was hesitant to respond, it wasn't her desire to become someones target of fraustration. But she could not help herself. She was lonely, and would talk to a puppet sock if it would respond back.
"Don't know, just tired of this shit hole and was looking for something even remotely entertaining. You been here long?"

"Long enough," he said, shrugging. It had only been a little over a week, but it felt like months had gone by. He hated being completely cut off from the outside world. How was he suppose to get in contact with anyone? He didn't call his friends and his parents didn't come to visit. He kicked at a piece of torn up carpet and try to rip up more. Everything inside of him wanted to distroy this place.
"I'm Logan, by the way," he added, getting at the carpet from a different angle. He didn't look up at her, and he didn't take his hands out of his pockets.

"I'm Abigail," she replied, watching her toes wiggle through her socks. Her mind started racing through possible questions to ask her new aquaintance, but she couldn't manage to find one that did not make her feel stupid asking. Sometimes when she would get nervous, she would stutter her words. She bit her bottom lip, trying to gain her composure.
"Are you from around here?" Abigail looked down the empty hallway behind Logan, trying to as much eye contact as possible.

"I'm not really from anywhere," he said, his green eyes still glued to the disgusting carpet. He knew that he should've explained how his parents kicked him out and how he's been on the streets for months, but he didn't want to get into it with someone he just met. Especially someone he just met in this shit-hole hospital.
"And you? From anywhere close?"

"I'm from Salt Lake City." Abigail pulled her hands at of her pockets and straightened herself up, instead of leaning on the wall. She was getting the vibe that Logan wasn't too talkative and figured the conversation wouldn't last much longer.
"My parents brought me here after my third attempt to runaway and then some." She let out a long sigh. Running out of things to talk about she tried on last ditch effort to get the kid talking. "So do you know who in hell can bum a smoke off of?"

"Well, you might just be in luck with that," he said, reaching into his back pocket and bringing out a pack of smoked. "Usually I hog my cigs, but you seem like you're desperate." He took two from the pack and handed one to her before putting the other in his mouth. After replacing the pack into his back pocket, he patted his pockets.
"Oh fuck," he pounded his fists in the air and took the cigarette from his mouth. "Please tell me you have a lighter. The fuzz took mine."

Abigail put the cigarette in her mouth then gave him a half smile. Then she reached into her back pocket and pulled out a red Zippo lighter. "Always be prepared," she said as she flipped open the top and lit a flame for Logan, then lit hers.
"Thank you, I'm indebted. I'm considered 'underage' so they took away my last two packs coming in here." Abigail inhaled deep holding it for a few seconds, then let it out slowly.

"Yeah, they're kind of shit heads about the rules and whatever," he puffed his cancer and sighed the smoke out of the corner of his mouth. Standing here with Abigail was kind of nice. He hadn't had anybody to talk to in a while, and smoking with someone else always made him happy.
He shuffled over to the wall and put his back to it, putting the stick in his mouth so he could fix his black hair with both hands. Taking a long drag, he slid down the wall to sit and motioned Abigail to do the same on the opposite wall. There were doors around them, but he was fairly certain they were either empty or the people inside of them weren't coming out.

Abigail followed in suit and slid down to the ground next to him. She was glad he decided to chat longer. It had been a bitch not talking to anyone close to her age the past few days. For the first time in weeks, she felt relaxed. She finally forced herself to look at his face, noticing how tired his eyes looked.
"I don't know how anyone in their right mind thinks any of us can get "better" in this shit hole. All I hear all night is crying and outbursts. Plus the bed checks don't help. Have you even met with the doctor yet? I've only seen nurses and the guy who runs my group."

"I can't even tell the staff from the patients. Everyone is all bags under the eyes. It's like, chill the fuck out." He puffed again, loving the sweet smoke in his lungs and in the air around him. Itching his nose was what he did when he didn't have anything to do with his hand. Up and down his fingers went on the bridge of his nose before he took another drag.
"So you ran away, huh? How come?"
